The days of fitting women with a 'small' men't bike are over. Bike manufacturers have finally realized that a women's body geometry is different than men (no kidding!), and are now building bikes specifically designed to fit. Everyone is different, but in general, women are proportionally shorter in the arms and torso and longer in the legs compared to men of the same height. Women's bike accomodate this difference with shorter top tubes and longer head tubes, along with other tweaks to accomodate overall smaller bodies such as smaller frame sizes and short-reach levers. With a bike that fits, you'll be more comfortable, and will be able to go longer and faster. And these bikes can be fast - while they may be 'scaled down', they are not 'tuned down' - these bikes offer the same high-performance build and components of the men's bikes, even if some of them do have 'girly' paint schemes!
Specialized provides a full-range of no-compromise road and mountain bikes for Women. Raleigh has a more limited set of women-specific road and comfort bikes.
